- Folks...
-
- Can anybody supply me with their experience in connecting
- to their local ISP's? I recently purchased a Penril V.34+ modem, hoping
- to speed up my downloads and such. Well, things are definitely faster,
-
- WHEN IT MANAGES TO SUCCESSFULLY CONNECT!
-
- Using my old Global Village Powerport Gold (14.4), I never was
- disconnected. But with my new, $500.00 (!) Penril, I noticed I was
- getting disconnected with much greater frequency. I made a test of
- calling my ISP 40 times, half of them with V.42bis disabled (suggested
- by Penril to improve connectivity).
-
- The results?
-
- 65% of the time I successfully connected with my ISP.
- 45% of the time, the line was either dropped after the
- modem registered a 28.8 or 26.4 connect; or the modem
- hung at the same handshake level, eventually dropping
- the line after 15 seconds.
-
- Now, 65% seems like a pretty terrible success rate, especially
- with such a supposedly superior modem. Also, the local ISP tells
- me that most of their customers with V.34 modems are getting a
- near-100% successful connect rate. I wouldn't mind so much
- if the modem dropped down to a lower rate when it was having
- problems, but instead it appears to just drop the line completely!
-
- So, what I'd like to know is, what's been your percentage of
- successful connects? What kind of modem are you using? What's
- your normal successful connect speed? All this will help me
- decide whether to try to get a refund or not. Thanks!
